Our students walk into school full of life, ready to learn, and excited for what is in store for them that day. Even though the students face many economic, social and other challenges they come to school excited to learn.
I work in a Title I school in Pennsylvania where 100 percent of our students receive free breakfast and lunch.
Despite the challenges that our students face, the come to school eager to learn. School should be a safe and predictable place for students who may not have safety and predictability elsewhere. Our students want to come to school so they can learn all that they can and be successful some day.
Educators know that it is nearly impossible to teach children who are anxious, angry and stressed. Our students face many challenges every day that many adults could not imagine including; violence, homelessness and hunger to name a few. These challenges create little minds that are overwhelmed, stressed and not prepared to sit quietly and learn. Could you imagine learning how to subtract when you are worried about where you will sleep that night or if you will encounter violence on your long walk home from school?
Using mindfulness and stretching with children can help them learn to regulate their emotions, manage stress and calm themselves.
Students who are able to self regulate and calm themselves are able to learn and preform the tasks required of a successful student.
When adults are stressed they can choose to go for a run or get a massage but what can students do to deal with their stress? As educators, we can teach students mindfulness and stretching strategies using the requested items like yoga cards, iPads with multiple free mindfulness apps, and bouncy balls for when they need to get some negative energy out.
The donations for this project will allow us to create a space in the school where students can go to calm down, groups can be run to teach students mindfulness and stretching skills and staff can be trained in skills they can use to help students become ready to learn.
Imagine the power of giving students strategies that will allow them to learn! If they are feeling angry they will know to use a Count Down to Calm strategy, if they are feeling tired they can do a quick Bunny Breath to energize and focus their minds. These skills will help them focus so that they can learn.
