Mindfulness & Music in the Classroom

My students need more examples of music in the classroom. In Hawaii, the state doesn't fund for "extras" teachers (i.e. PE, art, music, etc). Therefore, classroom teachers must also teach these subjects. We need music supplies!

My Students

My students are from a very wide variety of backgrounds. Our school is nestled between a military base and the west side of Oahu. About 1/4th of our students are military kids. The rest are local, coming from leeward and westside sides. This makes the gap between their household incomes wide. Most of my students struggle with supplies, whereas a small amount are secure. Parents try to help out, and I spend about $50 a month on my classroom, but sometimes it's still not enough!

Some of the things we struggle to get are books, materials, curriculum content, and incentive supplies.

I also have kids telling me every day how hungry they are, that they didn't have breakfast, or their lunch is too small, or just full of sugar snacks. I try to bring in healthy snacks, but it has proven to be an expensive venture.

My Project

I need to teach my kids music in class, but I don't have any tools. We have supplemented with a lot of singing, but they get bored after two quarters of just that. I am also eager to incorporate mindfulness into my classroom after seeing the real-life benefits of the practice in other classrooms.

With these instruments, I believe I can create comprehensive music units for all four quarters of the school year.

These music units will focus on how using sounds and examining our emotions together can affect how we feel.

I have kids with anger problems, hyperactivity, shyness, and many more facets of their amazing minds which could benefit greatly from mindfulness and music. Thank you so much for considering helping us out. Mahalo.
