I am one of two special education teachers that works in the PHS Resource classroom. We have roughly twenty students that are shared between the two of us, with a variety of educational, physical, social and emotional needs. The students find our classroom as a safe place amidst an environment that they may not otherwise be viewed positively, especially if they find school difficult.
We (my fellow special education teacher and I) have seen the benefits of being mindful and relaxation techniques with our students and selves, and the need for more of it in our school and community.
Seeing an opportunity with our upcoming May Term, we would like to teach two groups of thirty students yoga and mindfulness techniques in half day increments.
Our goal is give tools, techniques and ideas for students to address daily stress. In addition to theses methods and ideas, we would like to equip attendees with tactile items to utilize in being the best and most productive individuals they can be.
My Project
During the last week of May, we will have sixty students for three and a half hours a day to learn about being mindful in the midst of stress and anxiety, a common problem students have or will face in their life and career. The two teachers are taking a class to utilize yoga in the classroom and will bring those techniques to the students' attention, in addition to making tactile objects for calming. These items will include a weighted eye pillow, aromatic rollers, calm down bottle and stress balls, which are beneficial to reduce anxiety using all five senses. They will be able to take them to use as needed.
