My Students
I teach ESL to middle school students in the second largest city in New England, Worcester MA. Our students come from all over the world, with various levels of English language skills and a variety of learning and emotional needs. Several years ago, with the blessing of administration, I began to offer mindfulness and yoga after school, as part of our after school tutoring program.
Students could opt to join me and practice relaxation techniques such as mindful breathing and meditation, yoga and stretching, instead of getting extra help in English or Math, Science or Social Studies.
My class was full, with not just my students, but other students throughout the school who wanted to try mindful movement.
This year, we are rolling out a mindful movement program that will meet during period 7 daily, and will reach all 1000+ of our student population, as well as their teachers. Having fresh equipment will be an incredible boost to our program.
My Project
According to the students who have participated in the mindfulness matters program, meditation and yoga activities create a deep sense of relaxation in your body and mind. The students self-report that the movement helps keep you flexible, and paying attention to the breath helps clear your mind so you can deal with strong emotions.
Middle school is a time of great growth physically and mentally, and mindfulness provides essential tools that kids can master and apply effectively in any aspect of their lives.
WE all want to be seen and heard, and cultivating a sense of inner peace and calm can provide balance when things don't go the way we expect.
