My students are a strong and resilient group of learners. Our school aims to provide a sense of security and community to students who have often previously felt as though they did not belong.
I teach at a therapeutic elementary school for students who struggle with the social, emotional, and behavioral demands of a traditional public school setting.

My Project
I teach elementary age students in a therapeutic school for children who struggle with the social, emotional, and behavioral demands of a traditional school setting. Often times, my students have been placed in my classroom due to a history of significant acting out behaviors. They currently lack effective coping strategies to allow them to safely navigate their school day.
I am striving to bring mindfulness practices into my classroom to promote healing, healthy movement, social-emotional growth, and positive coping strategies.
I have requested yoga mats and yoga activity cards for daily classroom yoga activities. Together, we will explore how breath and movement can calm and center us. My students so often feel as though they have very little control over their lives which can be an incredible stressor. I want to teach them that deep breathing is a tool that they always have control over and that they can always find a safe space in their breath when they find themselves upset, scared, or frustrated.
I have additionally requested books containing inspiring stories about everyday children with central themes of positivity and social-emotional health. We will weave the concepts of these stories into our daily mindfulness intentions. I have also requested an essential oil diffuser and stress-relieving scents to create a calming classroom environment throughout the school day.
