This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students attend a Title 1 school and live in high poverty communities. Many of my students have experienced trauma, which results in anxiety, stress, depression, and sometimes misplaced aggression. Many of my students have been diagnosed with emotional disturbance and receive services from the school to help them cope.
Despite hardships, my students are curious, resilient, and eager to learn.
As a school, we have been working towards helping students develop healthy strategies to deal with their emotions. Oftentimes, students lash out or have outbursts as a response to their emotions because they have not learned different behaviors. Through Yoga Club, we aim to help students learn mindfulness techniques that will help them during times of stress and anxiety.
"If a child doesn't know how to read, we teach. If a child doesn't know how to swim, we teach. If a child doesn't know how to
multiply, we teach. If a child doesn't know how to behave, we...teach?...punish?"- Herner
My Project
These materials will be used for Yoga Club during lunch. Each month, I will ask teachers from different classes to select a student to participate in Yoga Club. These 10 students will meet twice a week during lunch to practice yoga and meditation techniques. Every month, a new group of 10 students will have the opportunity to participate in Yoga Club.
Introducing students to yoga and mindfulness techniques will reduce stress, aggression, and anxiety.
Through yoga, students will learn calming strategies as an alternative to aggressive behavior. Students will also learn to self regulate their reactions and emotions. Additionally, yoga and mindfulness techniques can improve students' concentration in class. The skills students learn will extend beyond Yoga Club as students can share the mindfulness techniques they learn with their peers and families.
Yoga classes can be expensive in New York City and are not easily accessible for students from low-income communities. With your help, my students can learn yoga and mindfulness techniques for free!
