My Students

We are a Title I school with a diverse population of students coming from all five boroughs of New York City.

The children in our classrooms are a mix of deaf, hard-of-hearing, and hearing children (most with deaf parents).

Although I am neither deaf nor hard-of-hearing, I am fluent in American Sign Language (ASL). Classroom instruction occurs in both ASL and spoken/written English, with two classroom teachers. We are a dual-language school dedicated to bridging the deaf and hearing communities.

My Project

Social-emotional health and building a classroom community are things we must establish before we - students and teachers - can begin tackling academic subjects. And they are concepts we must continue to support throughout the school year.

The books in this project serve to guide my kindergarten students through the steps of creating a safe and joyful space for learning.

Together we will embrace and champion compassion, empathy, perseverance, gratitude, kindness, and love. Students will learn how to express these huge concepts into small acts of support for one another. Then, into larger acts like standing up to make changes so our classroom and world are better places.
