Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are located in the South Bronx of New York City. They are neighborhood children that are curious and energetic. We are in a neighborhood school that continues to thrive in an area where there are many charter schools. Just blocks away from Yankee stadium, these kids take so much pride in their community and their school. They are talented, bright and filled with tenacity!

As 4th and 5th grade students, they are forward-thinking kiddos that are excited about being leaders within the elementary school community.

They are creative, smart and passionate about equity. These students have a clear understanding of what they have to offer the world as they continue to proceed through life.

They love movement and are in touch with their feelings. They wholeheartedly believe that they can have a positive impact on their community and the world at large.

My Project

All too often in schools we think of detention as a punitive device to deter student behavior. But what are they REALLY getting out of sitting in a room for a period and doing nothing.

Students should have the opportunity to reflect on their behaviors in a non-punitive way that fosters a healthy mind and body.

They should learn practices that can help them understand their behavior and regulate the feelings that are behind undesirable behaviors.

The best way to achieve this is through mindfulness and movement. Instead of detention, students will use the yoga materials we are asking for to do a 20 minute restorative yoga flow and then a 5 minute meditation. Afterward, they will have the chance to reflect on their behavior and talk to an adult about ways they can respond to situations in a much more productive and healthy way.
