All too often in schools we think of detention as a punitive device to deter student behavior. But what are they REALLY getting out of sitting in a room for a period and doing nothing. Students should have the opportunity to reflect on their behaviors in a non-punitive way that fosters a healthy mind and body. They should learn practices that can help them understand their behavior and regulate the feelings that are behind undesirable behaviors. The best way to achieve this is through mindfulness and movement. Instead of detention, students will use the yoga materials we are asking for to do a 20 minute restorative yoga flow and then a 5 minute meditation. Afterward, they will have the chance to reflect on their behavior and talk to an adult about ways they can respond to situations in a much more productive and healthy way.
