I teach 22 second-grade students at a Magnet School located in Hartford, Connecticut. After the new year, I gained four new students. I work at a school where free breakfast and lunch are served daily. My students all have diverse backgrounds (including Special Education and English language learners). My students come to school each and every day so eager and willing to learn. Some of my students suffer from an abundant amount of social/emotional issues going on in their personal lives which, at times, could make the long school day very difficult for them; however, despite the daily issues that most of my students face every day, they come into my classroom with such perseverance and try their personal best. My school and classroom is a safe and happy place for my students.
My Project
NW is a MicroSociety School meaning that mini-societies called ventures are created by students. Ventures are aligned to state standards and numeracy, literacy, and health and wellness curriculum areas. As part of the MicroSociety theme, students also demonstrate "HEART" strands within their school community (humanity, ethics, aesthetics, reflection, and trust). Students learn how to be responsible citizens. Unfortunately due to COVID-19, this will be my students' first time creating a venture, as they were not able to have this experience in 1st Grade or Kindergarten. My students are completely new to what ventures are, so they will be starting from square one.
The theme for our venture this year will be mindfulness and yoga.
I would like to make my student's first venture experience AMAZING! The resources requested in this project will be used as center activities once we get our venture up and running. Our class venture will be run like a real business. Students in my classroom will be employed and will have a specific job to run each activity within our venture. For example, one activity within our venture would be "mindfulness coloring." Students would quietly sit at a table while listening to calm, mindfulness music and color. Another activity would be making images with pattern blocks on a template. Students would practice identifying attributes of a 3D shape.
