This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work with a group of incredibly talented and unique junior high students at a highly impacted Title 1 school. I am a special education teacher in a behavioral classroom. This means that I focus on teaching social skills including self-regulation strategies, relationship building, executive functioning, and growth mindset, to between ten and fifteen 7th - 9th grade students with disabilities.

My classroom is trauma informed, which means that I have been trained, and continue to train myself, on understanding how trauma affects the brain and how to meet the social emotional needs of my students.

My goal is to build a safe and welcoming classroom community for my students to learn. They come from diverse backgrounds and have had difficult pasts. They are learning how to be successful in a world that hasn't always been kind to them.

My Project

There is a lot of research that supports mindfulness in the classroom to help students regulate their emotions and focus at school. Children are experiencing added stress and anxiety right now due to the coronavirus and everything that comes with social distancing, quarantine, new policies, and people in their lives becoming sick or even dying. My students need a variety of mindfulness strategies to help them manage their emotions.

Mindfulness drumming is a way for students to calm their minds and relieve stress.

Focusing on rhythmic sounds helps students be engaged in the present moment. Plus it is a naturally engaging activity.

My students will learn about and practice mindful drumming at the beginning of the year, and then we will continue the practice weekly. My goal is to also connect with a local elementary school and have select students lead mindful drumming with the elementary students.
