The 90 fifth grade students on my middle school team come to school every day enthusiastic and eager to learn. They love their school and their teachers, but stress and their inability to manage it independently is impacting their overall happiness and time dedicated to learning.
Mindfulness practices are a life-long gift for students.
These skills will not only assist my students in self-regulating emotions, managing stress, and increasing productivity now, but provide them with the tools to manage more complex adult lives down the road.
Over the past 2 years I have incorporated mindfulness practices in class, as research has demonstrated its emotional, social, academic, and physical health benefits. Each class begins with a short meditation or some other age-appropriate mindful exercise. The practice has been enthusiastically received by my students. My classroom is much calmer and more time is dedicated to learning. In order to help students independently use the practices we are "building" a Mindfulness Corner. donorschoose.org has generously funded the furniture for the corner, now we would like to have some finishing touches -- small supplies that make the space more appealing and functional.
The materials requested for this project will add the finishing touches to our mindfulness space. Right now we have the structure -- walls, seats, and timers, but it isn't "home" yet.
The space exists for mindfulness practices, but the tools and ambiance are missing.
The lights, frames, and liquid motion jar will help to create a peaceful space. The kinetic sand will provide a tactile alternative to breathing exercises, and the storage unit will hold supplies for additional mindfulness activities like journaling and coloring. Lastly, the mindful activity cards will increase our tools in our mindfulness practices. We can't wait!
