My Students

Our school is a Title I school located in southeast San Diego, CA. I have a high number of English language learners and an ethnically diverse population with Filipino, Hispanic, and African American students. Transitional Kindergarten and kindergarten is the first school experience for most of my students. Their favorite things to do are to build, pretend play, do art projects, and explore the world around them. They are full of energy! They have a love of learning and endless curiosity about their world.

My Project

Social emotional learning is so important for both emotional health and academic performance. My students have never been able to learn in person, and we do not know what the future holds. Kindergarten is the foundation for all learning, and the need for social emotional learning is even more important given the pandemic and social injustice in the world.

Living and learning through a pandemic has been traumatic for all of us, and yoga will help calm and center my young learners.

Yoga as well as stories that focus on mindfulness, empathy, perseverance, and friendship will help me to provide a calming and safe space to help my kindergartners manage their big feelings whether they are at home or at school. The books, journals, and other materials will help students develop strategies for coping with stress and uncertainty whether we are in the face-to-face setting or learning virtually.
