Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our Kindergarten classroom is full of 16 brilliant and unique learners. Our K-12 school is perched atop a hill in a busy city, we are looking to find the quiet within each of us, so we may make the best of our educational experience. Sometimes our emotions get the best of us, so we want to learn better ways to manage our feelings so we may get back to learning! Our class is a mix of English language learners, special education and typically developing students. Nearly all students receive free or reduced meals. We are an exuberant bunch and love doing yoga and mindfulness activities to help us find our inner peace in our busy world.
In the few months my class has been learning about mindful practice, the children are showing greater inclusion, compassion and awareness of their words and behaviors.
Children are reaching out to one another to identify how they feel and cooperatively problem solve with increasing independence. My heart leaps when I spot children labeling their emotion and saying what they need to feel better! When I see a child stop, use a breathing technique and then problem solve, I know each lesson is so important!
My Project
Every child wants to feel safe, calm and happy in life! Each day, we all experience a multitude of emotions. Children sometimes cannot regulate these feelings, leaving them overwhelmed or feeling stressed. When children are not feeling their best, academic learning suffers. Through teaching children social competency along with mindfulness, they will be better equipped to manage and regulate their emotions. By engaging in yoga, meditation and breathing practices with use of a variety of bells to guide them, children will practice finding a calm and mindful body. With the support of hands on props such as emotion stones, we will learn to recognize and name the emotions we see and feel within ourselves and others. A literature rich social emotional classroom needs high quality text that supports, enhances and validates our classroom discussions. By having the tools on hand, right in our classroom, I will be able to support and further develop the social emotional needs of each student. Namaste
