My Project
I've been told by students that my motto is "kindness and empathy," two things I try to model daily for my students, and encourage them to practice. For so many students the music room is their safe place. They can be vulnerable and trusting. They can take risks. And this also means there are often many tears and moments where big emotions show themselves as students learn to navigate self expression and authenticity.
My classroom is always a safe space for students to be who they are, and feel what they feel knowing they will receive love and validation.
I implement the DBT Steps-A skills in my classroom and in addition to having tissues on hand, I also like to provide moments where we can use our bodies to come back and settle into the present. Whether it's through fidget toy, or the movement of eating little goldfish, or a sip of water, or taking a moment to let the chocolate melt on your tongue, I use these little moments to help students stay grounded. And even though teenagers may not admit it, who doesn't want a little animal friend or piece of chocolate when you're sad. These items may seem silly or unconventional for high school, but they are all tried and true in helping students feel welcomed and loved in hard moments.
