Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Middle school is hard. Now imagine making that middle school transition as you begin your life in a brand new country, walking into a school surrounded by strangers speaking a language you do not understand. All of these changes and transitions can begin to take a mental toll on my students. I teach middle school newcomer ELD with most of my students coming from Mexico and Central America.
The flexible seating, fidgets, and seat bands will provide students with outlets to release stress and anxiety while being in an inclusive classroom setting.
Some of my students have never attended school before and are still adjusting to the norms of classroom seating and the educational system. Additionally, the colored pencils and snacks help create a more inclusive environment, helping these students see themselves to that it still foreign to them. With the current climate and increasing academic stressors, the fidgets, flexible seating and diffuses will create a more welcoming and safe space for my newcomers, allowing them to feel like our classroom is a home away from home. These seats and tools will help them adjust more easily into our school setting and serve as mental health aids to encourage a healthier body, mind, and overall student. These students are facing tremendous challenges, sometimes at both home and school and your help will enable them to create a mini sanctuary and resting place here at school.
