This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students come to school, despite dealing with the many challenges of coming from a low income/high poverty area. Some come to school hungry, with little sleep, and at times dealing with past trauma that makes it hard for them to learn.

For many of our students, my counseling sessions are the only chance they have at learning appropriate coping skills.These sessions teach them how to identify and deal with their emotions, with hopes to find ways to appropriately handle them while in the classroom.

My Project

Help me give my students the opportunity to be mindful and see themselves as capable of managing difficult emotions. I want to support my students' social-emotional development by instilling the love of who they are.

As the school social worker, I am committed to ensuring that my students have access to the mental and physical benefits of mindfulness.

Mindfulness helps reduce stress, anxiety, strengthen attention, and help developmental growth. There are so many different activities revolving around mindfulness. It can be as simple as sitting in a seat and focusing on your breathing or just squeezing a stress ball until you calm down.

My students will benefit from the requested mindfulness tools by learning how to manage difficult emotions in a fun, safe and healthy way. The tools will support me in teaching children to be mindful. The materials will also provide a safe and soothing place to practice these skills.

My goal for this school year is to integrate mindfulness into the school day, which will help to teach my students coping strategies. This will especially benefit my students with special needs such as Autism, ADHD, Sensory Disorders, Developmental Delays, etc, This tools requested in this project are diverse and are needed to further support my work with students in the classroom, during groups and counseling sessions.
