it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
This is my 17th year as an educator. I started my career as a special education classroom teacher and have been working as a school social worker for the past 11, and yoga teacher for the past year. I have the honor of supporting the needs of students, families, and staff at two schools on Staten Island. My schools are high poverty schools in New York City. All of our students receive free lunch. Ninety-seven percent of our student population is Black or Latino; many are first-generation Americans. Many of my students are transitioning from homelessness and or living in temporary housing. Many of my students have experienced a traumatic event that threatened their sense of physical security. Thirty percent of our students receive Special Education services. Despite the challenges they face daily, my students are sweet, silly, creative and talented beings. As an educator that practices mindfulness and yoga, I know the physical and mental benefits. I teach mindfulness and yoga to my students so they learn how to pay attention to the relationship between their mind and body. The yoga program that I facilitate offers students the opportunity to build strength, flexibility, balance and mental focus.
My Project
I love teaching my students to mindful of how they take up space in the world. Learning to consider how our thoughts impact our attitude and behavior. Through mindful reading students learn and practice being present and still. Virtually and in person I have found that children enjoy the opportunity to be quiet and still and bring ease to their bodies. Teaching children connect with their emotions thoughts and feelings allows them to connect with the larger world and see themselves as part of a global community and gifts them the ability to celebrate the rich diversity of humanity.
