My students need yoga mats and assistive supplies to incorporate a mindfulness program to teach students self-regulation skills to improve emotional control, focus, awareness, and problem solving skills both inside and outside of the classroom.
"Champions don't show up to get everything they want; they show up to give everything they have". Who are these champions? Simply, my students. My champs have fought through battles most can't relate. My champs have endured challenges that should have brought them down, but they got back up. My champs have an inner strength the size of mountains. My champs are the ones who soar above those who try to take them down. Why?
Because my champs are strong, courageous, willful, passionate, ambitious, and persevere against their odds.
They have dreams they will work to get to. They are loyal and trusting of those who push and love them. They are soft inside and hard on the outside. And while they expend an immense amount of energy and resilience to continue towards their dreams day in and day out, like any champ, one can trip. And while down, my champs can feel weak and empty. But with proper support, I can help those students get back up feeling positive, loved, and important yet again.
My Project
Statistics show that children living in low-income high poverty areas are more likely to experience high trauma situations. This is the case for many of my students, resulting in impulsive, aggressive, and other negative types of behavior. My students have difficulty coping, managing their emotions, and problem solving when put in situations that cause them stress, frustration, or anxiety. Unfortunately, many schools, including mine, aren't well equipped with mental health programs that address these issues.
But here at my school, we are trying to change this so that every student has the skills they need to become more successful now and for their futures.
The yoga mats, metronome, and other supplies will support the program being implemented into the school day that is based around mindfulness. These materials will help build a more relaxing space where students can "reset" their minds, learning how to focus on breathing, how to make peace with their thoughts, how to be more aware, and more. With these materials, the program will help reduce the amount of negative behaviors and distractions from learning so that my students can better focus on their education to become the strongest champions I know they are.
