It’s Monday morning and my students come into my music room—some excited, some tired, some anxious, some relieved, and some stressed. Their faces tell the stories of everything that has happened to them before they see you. Students face challenges we know nothing about. These challenges are real and for students, it is all they can think about as we try to teach them music. I, as a music educator, can help provide skills and tools for students to confront these challenges and stressors.
SEL is a construct being implemented across the globe intended to provide students with the skills to confront their challenges by being self-aware, socially-aware, and to make responsible decisions.
Broad instruction often takes the form of reflection, discussion, and lecture.
I want to use these items to create a calming corner for students who are having self-regulation issues. I want them to have a safe area where they can go and get their feelings and emotions regulated. I also want the students to have access to fidgets and other sensory items needed for mindfulness and calming. These items along with others will give me the tools I need for a successful mindful music area in my classroom.
