Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
This project will create a calming space in the classroom or shared school areas like the hallway, cafeteria, or library, where students can go when they need a mental health break. The space will include resources like coloring pages, stress balls, fidget tools, and scented markers to help students self-regulate and refocus. These tools support emotional well-being and give students healthy ways to manage stress and overwhelming feelings. By offering this safe and quiet environment, students can return to the classroom feeling more calm, confident, and ready to learn.
Having a safe and calming space available makes a powerful difference in how students learn and manage their emotions throughout the day.
For many students, especially those in special education, the school environment can sometimes feel overwhelming. A designated break area offers students the opportunity to step away. It supports their mental health and provides a healthy way to cope with the everyday challenges they face.
My classroom serves 20 incredible special education students who work hard every day despite the obstacles in their lives. Many of them rely on the classroom as one of the only safe and predictable places they can count on. By creating calming spaces in other areas of the school—such as the hallway, cafeteria, or library—we can extend that sense of safety and belonging beyond the classroom. This project not only supports my students but also helps create a schoolwide culture where emotional wellness and mental health are valued. Giving students a place to take a break when they need it encourages self-awareness, reduces stress, and ultimately helps all students succeed.
