Mindful Moments for Growing Healthy Bodies and Souls

Help me give my students unique and creative tools to fill a "magic yoga suitcase." Materials requested will aid in the creation of mindful activities and meditation exercises that will increase focus and relaxation.

My Students

Students come from all walks of life at our school. We celebrate diversity on a daily basis and look for ways to create a learning environment that appeals to all types of learners. We celebrate various learning styles and embrace the differences that make us all unique. This year our class includes multi-language learners, students with hearing impairments and students benefiting from various sensory integration strategies. We are nestled in a south side Chicago neighborhood, walking distance from a large university.

My Project

I am so excited to bring yoga and meditation, that is especially designed for children, into my classroom and school. I recently attended and completed the three-day Rainbow Yoga for Kids teacher training. I will use my knowledge from the training and the materials outlined in this project to integrate yoga into my 1st graders' daily routines, as well as creating an after school program for students ages 5-9.

Children need opportunities to mindfully move, connect, have fun and access a quiet and calm space for relaxation and meditation.

We will use books such as "You are a Lion" and "Where's my Mom?" to guide students through a series of poses and stretches. Children will assist in the co-creation of stories and journeys that incorporate partner poses, breathing techniques and games. Through the design of activities and lessons using the specified materials, students will develop a deeper connection to themselves, as well as others. Help us pack our magic yoga suitcase so that we can begin an awesome journey of self discovery and connection.
