This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are learning not just the skills needed for academics but also the social emotional skills they will need throughout their life. Reading to students creates a shared experience that we all can refer to at any given time. Mindfulness and empathy are my two goals for my students.

My students are predominately latino and low income.

They come from undeserved populations where the school is seen as the place kids come to to learn. They are survivors. They are fun loving, caring kids who love routine and need stability at school. They want to do what is right but they need to be shown the way. They work hard to please you and are creative and hard working. My students need encouragement and appreciation from all people around them.

My Project

Theses books, including Silence, It's Just a Game and Wings, will become a major key component to our classroom community. We will have a shared experience to refer to throughout the day because the characters in these books will seem to be in our class too. The students will use these books as a way to navigate and understand themselves, each other and the world around them.

My students have many hurdles in life.

If we can shift through the social emotional stuff as a community, my students will be better able to navigate life as a whole. You can tell a kid 500 times why it is mean to tease someone for the way they look. But you can create an experience with a group of students where they are talking about and sharing their opinions, and listening to one another. The books I have chosen will facilitate deeper learning.
