My Students
My students are creative, thoughtful and full of questions! They absolutely love hands-on, active, engaging projects and challenges that allow them to think outside the box to find solutions!
Our school is nestled in an At-Risk community where our Scholars(students) live.
But they are ambitious and visionaries. We as teachers need a variety of things to help them reach their full potential in education.
My Project
Almost every high school in the U.S. offers some type of extracurricular activity, such as music, academic clubs, and sports. These activities offer opportunities for students to learn the values of teamwork, individual and group responsibility, physical strength and endurance, competition, diversity, and a sense of culture and community. Extracurricular activities provide a channel for reinforcing the lessons learned in the classroom, offering students the opportunity to apply academic skills in a real-world context, and are thus considered part of a well-rounded education. Recent research suggests that participation in extracurricular activities may increase students' sense of engagement or attachment to their school, and thereby decrease the likelihood of school failure and dropping out (Lamborn et al, 1992; Finn, 1993). If, indeed, participation in extracurricular activities can lead to success in school, then the availability of these activities to students of all backgrounds becomes an important equity issue. I am so fortunate as a teacher and girls’ fast-pitch softball coach. I get to develop my student-athletes’ minds and bodies. I have twenty-five girls playing softball. Unfortunately they don’t have the exercise equipment like the male student-athletes. With this gym equipment, they will able to be in physical shape as they prepare for their games. I coach a sport where all my student-athletes girls have an opportunity to play. As a donor you are able to help me prepare them physically and mentally to prepare for the game and in the classroom.
