Hello! I teach a second grade class at a southern California school which is located in a military housing area. All of the students who are in my class have parents serving our country. Our school serves almost 70% low income families, many who are young parents with several young children. Besides dealing with the day to day responsibilities, they have the additional burden of having to maintain hope and faith while their spouse and/or fathers and mothers are deployed in a war zone.

Our school has faced drastic budget cuts. Not only have staff members been cut, but our money for supplies has been cut back as well. We've only allotted money for the essentials like paper, crayons, and pencils. This year in my classroom, I have several students who have special learning needs, as well as students who are at or above grade level. They are all grouped in reading levels according to their needs, but I needed to find activities that would keep them engaged while I work with other groups, and worksheets are just downright boring!

I came across Hot Dots Reading Comprehension Quiz Cards and the Power Pens. They are interactive, fun, and at the same time, the child is learning. It's hard to keep the video game generation engaged, but this should do the job! The student takes a card, and answers the question. He/She then makes an educated guess and touches the power pen to the answer they think is correct. If it is correct, the pen talks and tells them, "Good Job!" If they make a mistake, it tells them, "Try Again." I thought it would be the perfect activity to help keep my students actively engaged with reading comprehension while I work with other students in small reading groups.

What can you do to help? We would love to have a set of Hot Dots Reading Comprehension Cards and the Hot Dots pens. I would love to be able to provide my students with a fun and engaging activity to help them with their reading comprehension skills. We appreciate your consideration and hope you can help make our little wish come true. On behalf of my 2nd graders and their military families, I thank you for your time and generosity.
