My Students
Some of my military kids are bullied because they are new kids or different. When they bring food from home it does not look like the food that everyone else is eating. My students want to study and taste different foods. I need to provide opportunities for them to share what they know & learn more.
Our school is an older, urban school located near two military bases and many of my third grade students are part of military families.
Our school does not have many resources other than textbooks and we do not even have those for science! Nearly 2/3 of my students qualify for free and reduced breakfast and lunch, often those free meals are the only food they have. My school has a tradition of being a neighborhood school but it is now a school in transition. Our neighborhood is changing. 1/5 of the families received Supplemental Social Security Income or Public Assistance. Our student population is racially and ethnically diverse. One out of every 9 students is in our bilingual/ bi-cultural program. We have students who have recently arrived from Germany, Ireland, Somalia, China, and the Philippines, as well as Natives from Alaskan rural areas. They love reading and learning about science. Right now, science is ignored in our school because we have no time and no resources.
My Project
I am requesting 27 slow cookers, and 24 different books about the science of cooking and recipes including Everybody Serves Soup. Using the books, I will introduce science of food and how to use slow cookers. On Friday we will cook in the library. Students will take a slow cooker home so they can show their families how to cook as part of their home work. My 3rd grade foodies will be learning about food preparation, nutrition and healthy snacks as they travel around the world with their tummies. My military kids can share recipes from different places. Kids will be creating snacks and eventually creating a cookbook to share with the entire school. Right now, free and reduced breakfast and lunches are often the only food some students have. Weekends and holidays are not days of celebration but they are days with special problems. On those days kids may have nothing to eat. My students need to learn how to cook and become more self-sufficient.
My third graders are part of military families and with this project they will learn self-sufficiency and cooperation as they study nutrition, share different cultures, and learn to cook.
The requested materials will bring the science of cooking into the lives of my military students. This grant will enable them to learn to cook and take the first steps toward eating low-cost, nutritious, healthy meals and snacks. Please help them.
