Military Kid MakerBots: 3 Dimensional Ideas Printed in Reality!

My students need a three dimensional Maker Bot-Replicator printer and filament to use in the printer for our elementary art/design class.

My Students

Students at Silverdale Elementary School are approximately half military dependents and half students from a poor rural area of North Carolina.

Parents of our students are often deployed all over the world protecting our freedom!

Most of the other students are being raised by grandparents or single parent homes.

Our school is not in a real community as it is surrounded by farmland and tobacco fields, with the nearest major museum being about 2 1/2 hours away.

We have about 470 students in our school. We are a Title 1 school wide learning environment. We are also a Stephen Covey Leader In Me Lighthouse School, which means our students meet the criteria of being great leaders preparing for the future!

My Project

Right now some schools, especially high schools in our district have three dimensional printing. There are not enough resources to put them in schools that are not considered STEAM schools. Our school is a Covey Leadership School. We are creating future leaders.

The high school engineering teacher told me it would be great to start practicing three dimensional design in elementary school so students will be prepared for success in high school.

Design and thinking outside the box are skills needed for future creativity in business and all other career paths.

Having a three dimensional printer will allow students to make their sketches come to life in three dimensions. They will be able to see the reality of what they design from all angles and sides and create something real and concrete in a 21st Century medium. Architects and car designers are starting to use this medium in their designs to show to clients.

Our military children and children who normally would not get a chance to use this new and exciting technology will become excited about the possibilities!
