Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My students would benefit greatly from a class set of the writings of a great columnist, Mike Royko.

My school is 50% African American and 50% Latino. The poverty rate among our students is 94.1%.

Our newspaper program had produced three editions in two years before I took it over at the beginning of this year. Since the start of school, we have published once every two weeks; with a total of 7 editions published by the holiday break. Now that kids have begun to feel the rhythm of journalism and are publishing more regularly, I feel they could benefit greatly by examining the writings of some great journalists, and who better to start with than Mike Royko? If you could help provide a class set of 30 copies of "The Best of Mike Royko" I know that the lives of my students will be impacted, even if they never write another story after they leave my class. I believe this because of the power of Mr. Royko's writing. If you are unfamiliar with his writing, maybe this quote from a customer review at Amazon will help: "Mike Royko was the best American newspaper columnist ever. Royko DEFINED what it means to be a columnist. Sometimes humorous, sometimes disdainful, but always full of life, a Royko column was always a treasure." That's what I hope my students can learn if you can fund this resource request for me.
