This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I am the librarian at a Title 1 school which means that many of our students come from low-income families. These students love to learn and read but many times cannot afford the needed supplies for specific projects. Many of our students do not have access to books in their home and depend solely on the school library for books and often the materials needed learning.
My students are smart, eager to learn and many are part of an optional academic program for qualifying students.
These students love projects, especially one that allows them to make something of their own.
My Project
We will study the book Midnight Without a Moon by Linda Williams Jackson. This book takes place in Mississippi in 1955, it is a fictional account of the events surrounding Emmett Till.
Funding of this project will allow each child the have their own paperback book so that they can annotate and highlight parts of the book they feel are important.
The composition books will allow each child to have their own "project" to complete and take home. They will keep all materials at school until the project is complete. After completion, they will take both books home to keep.
The objective is to teach these students to read and comprehend quality literature as well as gain a better understanding of the story of Emmett Till.
