Middle Schoolers Like To Munch -An Incentive Program

My students need a variety of snacks as part of an incentive program designed to motivate participation and reading.

My Students

I teach 7th and 8th grade reading to a great group of kids who began the year saying how much they hate to read, that they would rather do anything than read. In previous years, students with the same attitude have made great strides in reading, writing and thinking.

My students will work on an online reading program at their individual levels as well as engage in oral reading fluency groups.

Their accuracy, speed, fluency and vocabulary will improve with the support of incentives and a multi-sensory program.

My Project

For the last several years, I have initiated a motivational program that is fun for students in the first quarter of the school year. Food does get middle schoolers attention. These students are placed in my class due to being struggling readers.

A fun point system where they can earn a variety of snacks and other incentives helps take the sting out of the placement and gets them focused on the positive.

My students with the help of this incentive program will begin to participate in class through reading writing and discussion. This will lead to great improvement in their skills.
