A Kids Book About is a fantastic resource for educators working with young people. This series addresses serious topics such as racism, immigration, shame, sexual identity, school shootings as well as light hearted topics such as empathy, belonging, and love in a kid friendly manner.
Whether it be in a whole group, small group or independently, this resource allows for natural connections and meaningful conversations for students.
Having read A Kids Book About Anxiety with a student affirmed this potential. She immediately said "wow, that is exactly what it's like for me. I never knew how to explain it before" allowing us to connect to the bouncy ball feeling she gets in her belly. For another student, it was just a matter of looking through different titles and noticing he grabbed the one on depression. This created a bridge for us to discuss his wonderings about depression and how it manifests at home within his family, which his teachers and I were unaware of. It quickly changed our narrative about him being a lazy middle school boy to a student in need of support for his mental health.
While they may not agree with this statement, middle schoolers are still kids. The Kids Book About series can support their needs and wonderings just as much as it can their younger selves.
