Our students come to school everyday (with 98.4% attendance) in a diverse, low-income, urban community. They are 68% Asian, 14% African-American, 11% Latino, 6% Caucasian and 1% multiracial.
Our school community supports the whole student academically, physically and emotionally.
By meeting the needs of our students on many levels, we help them to find success in school and in their community. It is a collective effort to help each of our students become the best people they can be. We try to create a foundation that they will take with them through their education and beyond.
My Project
My classroom is set up in a traditional small group table model. We adjust the layout as needed and we are pretty successful. However, the room is a classroom and there seems to be something missing.
I want my students to have a space that feels comfortable, like a welcoming home because for many of us, school is a second home.
Providing an SEL corner in the room with comfortable seating, ottomans, pillows and a table will provide my students with a space where they can retreat if they are struggling, use as a creative exploration space or just a space to hang out during transitions and morning meeting time. Addressing the social emotional needs of students is just as important as meeting their academic needs. I want this safe space to become the students' own corner of our classroom world.
