Middle School Workbook Organization

My Project

My seventh and eighth grade English Language Arts students were great sports about a new curriculum we rolled out last year. We became invested in the stories and took on challenging content, but having workbooks was new for us all. Over summer, I came up with a workbook storage system- each student had their own numbered hanging file folder, and these were placed in milk crates, one for each class. The problem with this first system was not the kids! They had the routine down- they come in and immediately take out their workbook before having a seat. However, the file folders broke often, which meant I was constantly taping them. Their labels would snap off, causing delays when students would retrieve their workbook at the start of class. So, this summer I schemed again, and decided to try and invest in a sturdier and more streamlined organization system for their workbooks- a mailbox with labels for their names (color coded for each of my three classes). This project is also a more equitable one- a lot of my students experience disruptions in their life outside of school, meaning their materials get left behind at family member’s homes that they don’t consistently live at. Many do not have backpacks and if they do, they are not sturdy enough to make it months into the school year. By winter, many do not have backpacks anymore. So, keeping their class workbooks in a mailbox system ensures everyone has the materials they need every day to learn and grow in my class.
