Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

You can't run a school well without heavy parent involvement. I want to have a Parent Center in our school library. The library is located very close to the front gate of the school and it has great air conditioning. (A must, since we are in Florida.) We are an excellent venue for parent activities.

Our school desperately needs to involve more moms and dads.

Our PTA needs to recruit more members. We need more school volunteers; more participation in fund-raising activities. Working with my sixth, seventh and eight-grade library aides, I want to set up a center in the library where parents can relax, take their kids to hear stories, have access to information and interact with a professional Community Involvement Specialist. The aides have come up with two ideas for our Parent Center.

My Project

1) We have a lot of board books in the library. They are very, very easy books: the kind that you would read to tiny tots. Our students won't check them out because they are too easy even for first graders. Our parents should be using the board books with pre-school children at home. So we'd like to display the board books in eye-catching bookshelves, which we'll put in the Parent Center. 2) It's no good having a Parent Center if nobody knows about it. We have a bulletin board outside the library, which looks a little humdrum and worse for wear. We also have a mobile display stand. We'd like to liven our displays up with colorful Dr. Seuss-themed decorations. That way, when parents come through the front gate of the school, they'll want to pay us a visit. That is why we need this Tot Tutors Book Rack.

Please help my middle school aides with this very important project.

Without heavy parental involvement, no school can achieve its full potential. This project will help us to realize the dream of an attractive Library / Parent Center. (We've already taken some steps: student volunteers have painted the Story Center and the main library doors.) The bookshelves for the board books and more attractive bulletin boards are two more steps toward our goal.
