Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are a vibrant, funny, artistic, and creative community of learners. My students and I represent the Center For Learning. The Center for Learning is the special education department of our school. The beauty of this program is that it begins in 1st grade and ends in 12th grade. Due to the fact that many of our students are within our school building for a good portion of their educational journey, we get to truly know them academically, socially, and emotionally. This affords us the beauty to breed and foster an atmosphere of becoming family-oriented. As a result of this unique educational experience, we get to form and develop meaningful relationships!

I want nothing but the best for my students!

The CFL department is comprised of many students with a wide range of cognitive delays and disabilities. Our population ranges from students with mental retardation, vision issues, autism, speech, and language delays. Despite their delays, our primary focus is to educate all of our students. As a staff, our belief is that all of our students can learn no matter what their disability might be. We don't see labels or classifications, we see students with amazing potential.

My Project

Many of my students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds. As a result, they don't eat at home and rely on meals provided by the school. Sadly, students are only allotted one school breakfast and one school lunch per day. Anyone whose ever been around middle school students knows that one school breakfast and one school lunch are not going to satisfy the appetite of a healthy growing middle school student. These desperately needed snacks will serve as supplemental meals to ensure that my students will have the energy they need to remain engaged and ready to learn.

"Mr. Ramos, do you have something to eat?" This is a question that I'm asked quite often by my students.

I try my best to keep my little snack been filled so that I can satisfy the hunger issues of my students. I'll be honest, I cannot keep up with the demand. Due to the huge appetites of my students, I do my best to not eat in front of my students because they are quick to ask me for an extra apple, grapes, or bag of trail mix. Most times I will just offer my snack to the student or share it with them.

Not only will these snacks serve as nutritional "pick me ups" but many of my students will do anything for a snack or treat. These snacks will also serve as motivation to help them stay focused and get their work done.
