This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are 6th, 7th and 8th graders. They go to a K-8 school in Florida. Most students at the school are from low-income households and are learning English as their second language (the first language is usually Spanish). The children learn best through play, when they use manipulative materials in small groups and are engaged in goal-oriented activities. So I want to offer my students the ultimate in math and science manipulatives.
My middle school students are going to build and program robots!
My Project
The children will learn how to build robots, equip them with color, touch and infrared sensors and program the robot 'brain.' They will learn how to operate the Mindstorm robots via remote control. They will plan their robot projects together, and will need to cooperate closely as a group during the building stage. This is our school's first venture into robotics. We read about robotics clubs and activities at more affluent schools, and I think it is time that our kids got in on the act! I am sure that this will be one of the most exciting projects that these students undertake in middle school.
