Reading is fundamental and part of me getting my students to understand this is running ongoing reading incentive programs in the media center. Many of my students come from homes with little to no literature in them and they would love the opportunity choose a novel of their own that they can keep.
We are a Title I school in Florida with over 90% free or reduced lunch.
My students have little access to books outside of school. Basic necessities often go unfulfilled and books are considered a luxury. These kids frequent the media center but it would be invaluable to be able to offer them a book to keep as part of a greater reading incentive program.
My Project
These books would be used as an incentive as part of a larger program done throughout the year in the media center. Many of my students cannot afford to own a book, even one as cheap as a paperback and I am constantly asked if they can "keep" a library book. This would allow them to choose a book to keep and give them a goal to work towards as they do their Reading Counts program. Reading for pleasure is shown to increase reading comprehension skills and classroom grades and it is important to get kids reading as often as possible.
These kids cannot afford to buy books yet many of them would love to have a book they can read and reread as often as they like.
They have worked hard all year on their reading counts quizzes and these would be great incentives to motivate them.
