Middle School Podcasters

My students need a podcast station in order to complete our Pencil project that was completed this year.

My Students

Do you remember what it was like when you were able to broadcast your own news and radio shows in school? My students will probably never be exposed to what we enjoyed during our school years unless they have funding to support their efforts..

My students are high-needs, at-risk and about half also have special needs.

They come from a challenging neighborhood in the New York area. We are a restructured middle school and from the Principal down to the school aides we do what is necessary to ensure and support the academic success of our students. Due to severe budget cuts, currently much of our staff donates their time to after school sessions in math and English language arts. In addition our staff moderates enrichment activities such as track, craft clubs, a hip hop dance team and talent show rehearsals. The biggest obstacle we face is a lack of student focus. That being said, my task is to develop this focus through hands-on music making with the use of guitars, keyboards and clarinets, many of which were donated through the efforts of Donors Choose. In addition, we have a Music Technology program where I teach my students to think and problem-solve by creating their own projects through freeware and through Apple's Garage Band.

My Project

As we know, not all students enjoy learning to play instruments. It is for these students, as well as my music technology students, that I am requesting a Podcast starter kit and a trifold divider for the music room. We are partnered with a private acoustical and engineering firm through the Pencil program and throughout last year and into this year our partners worked with myself and my students in researching and designing a project for our music room that includes soundproofing and a podcast station. Due to the Department of Education guidelines we cannot complete the soundproofing, however we can put in a Podcast station. Because of severe budget cuts we do not have the funds to realize that portion of the project either.

My goal is to help my students develop the focus they need through any means possible.

Arts education has been proven to help students develop the skills they need to perform successfully in all core subject areas. I give my students the core support they need and differentiate according to student interest. Giving my students the opportunity to develop their own radio and school news podcast will help our students build lifelong skills that they will use throughout their educational careers.
