Neil Gaiman once said, “Fairy tales are more than true: not because they tell us that dragons exist, but because they tell us that dragons can be beaten.” As adolescents, my students are going through many changes in their lives and often feel uncertain of who they are. Many appear to be hardened by difficult home life circumstances, but their perseverance and ability to show up to school is truly inspirational. While these kids may seem tough on the outside, they begin to open up once they realize they are genuinely loved. The ‘dragons’ of their circumstances can be beaten at school with the help of a strong support system.
My students learn more than just grammar, plot structure, and citing evidence in my classroom, they are also learning life skills and how to cope in healthy ways with difficult situations.
My classroom is built around a culture of love and safety which allows my ‘Sour Patch Kids’, as I lovingly refer to them, to open up and flourish in my ELA classroom. We are excited to begin an adventure exploring new worlds and learning alongside our favorite characters to be brave in the face of adversity and hardship.
My Project
Remember the good old days of uncontrollable hormones and changes to your body that many of us have blocked out? My 7th grade students are learning to feel comfortable in their own skin and the energy which accompanies those changes. It is my goal to meet each individual student where they are and accommodate the needs of every student that enters my classroom.
I have observed many students needing to expel extra energy as they learn about the difference between informational and narrative writing.
The foot pedals will allow this energy to be released in a controlled manner, which will still allow them to focus on the tasks at hand. The window covering will allow students to focus on the material presented instead of the basketball games taking place outside our windows. The headphones will allow my students to listen to soothing music as they take risks in their writing. I have also requested inspiring novels that may help them to recognize the potential they possess.
Each of the materials that we have requested will ensure that each individual can reach their full potential in school and provide energy and confidence in their future endeavors.
