Imagine walking into a classroom, with limited experiences in a formal education setting. You have never read or written, and you have this smiling teacher talking to you in a language you don't understand. These are the students I teach every day. I work in a large school with a very high immigrant population on the island of Oahu.
Many of my students have very limited schooling in their own language and are now thrust into a formal school setting.
We move from learning letters to reading very quickly. They love to read and have a high interest in the latest technology trends. This year we have incorporated coding into our curriculum. We have ordered books that will help them to take their coding skills to new levels. Most of them do not have access to computers at home, but we are able to provide it for them in our classrooms. Teachers may not be able to control their home lives, but we can certainly control their experiences in our classrooms. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I hope to inspire even my earliest learners to strive for a path of academic excellence.
My Project
Being a teen can be really stressful! My students are in the 6th grade, and we celebrate their 12th-teen birthdays. Which is exactly where they are, the last year before entering the teenage years.
Mindfulness is all about living fully in the present moment, without judgment, and with an attitude of kindness and curiosity.
It’s about breathing, noticing what’s happening right here and now, sending a gentle smile to whatever you’re experiencing at this moment (whether it’s easy or difficult), and then letting it go. You can be mindful anytime, anywhere, no matter what you’re doing. It sounds simple, but it’s not always easy to do, especially when you are stressed!
A growing body of evidence suggests that mindfulness practice could be beneficial to teens, helping them cultivate empathy, as well as skills for concentration and impulse control. In short, mindfulness can help adolescents navigate the challenges of adolescence.
As parents or teachers, we can introduce young people to the practice of mindfulness, or purposeful, nonjudgmental awareness. It will definitely take some work, however, to convince teenagers of the value of slowing down, disconnecting from their digital devices and simply breathing.
This project will give us the simple tools needed to continue our practice. They will use the notebooks and pencils for journaling. We will all benefit from the reading material, and enjoy the activity cards. Lastly, the essential oils diffuser and Tibetan singing bowl will be a nice touch for our classroom environment and help with our meditation process. I am excited to grow and expand with my students this school year.
