This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I teach 7th and 8th grade at a school on the far northeast side of Chicago where 100% of our students receive free lunch. Many of our students come from immigrant and refugee families living in a low-income community. While my students are hardworking, the resources in our classroom often fall short, especially when it comes to technology. Due to a lack of funding, we struggle to provide the devices needed to support the learning experiences these students deserve.
A few years ago, we were lucky to receive some generous donations that helped us improve our classroom library and upgrade our tech, but recently, one of our laptops has stopped working, leaving us short on devices.
As we continue working toward improving test scores and preparing for the new Common Core assessments, having access to reliable technology is crucial for my students’ success.
We love reading in our classroom, and we have a fantastic library filled with books. However, managing and organizing our library has become difficult with our outdated checkout system. We need one new laptop to replace the broken one and to help streamline our library system. With a new laptop, we can set up an online checkout system, making it easier for students to find and borrow books.
In addition to the laptop, we will also be able to print labels for the books and materials, further organizing our classroom space and creating a more efficient, student-friendly environment. This new technology will allow my students to access the tools they need to grow academically, while fostering a love for reading that will last a lifetime.
