Help me give my students materials to create a class dedicated to physical and mental wellness. The yoga mats, zen boards, and art materials will be utilized by students (and staff) for mindfulness classes and movement opportunities.
Our public middle school lis ocated in Arvada, Colorado. We are a large school, serving over 900 students. As the metro area grows, our student is becoming increasingly diverse in a multitude of ways.
Like many of the middle schools in America, our students currently deal with issues and concerns well beyond those of past generations.
In the past several years we have seen a marked increase in students reporting struggles that include, but are not limited to anxiety, depression, stress, and suicidal ideation.
As of today, we have no idea of the impact that Covid-19, stay-at-home orders, social distancing, and remote learning will have on our students and staff. Unfortunately, I can only guess that it will be significant and we (all educators and schools) will feel the impact when we return to school.
I am fully aware that our school will not be alone in this new reality. Our students will be a drop-in-the-bucket of the millions of children in need. Our families will be among the countless that have been affected by Covid-19. However, I remain confident that our community will stand strong and provide support to all we can.
My Project

In response to our students' and staff's new reality, and with the hope of creating a meaningful experience for all, I will be developing and teaching a health and wellness class, unique to Drake, and designed specifically for middle school students.
The class is a fusion of science, wellness, fitness, and health and is all about improving well being. Students will experience firsthand how strengthening their bodies and minds can reduce stress and promote overall health. The class is intended to benefit students daily as well as build skills that will be useful for a lifetime.
A typical week in the class will include two days of lessons to develop, and practice, mindfulness literacy and two days of movement (yoga). The course will cover five dimensions of mindfulness: body, mind, heart, society, and ecology. It is my hope, that by creating opportunities to focus on these five dimensions separately (though lessons and experiences) that students will end the class capable of bringing them together into an integrated whole. For this reason, on some days students will dress-out and experience a full yoga class (therefore the mats and blocks). On other days, we will build strategies to reduce anxiety and improve focus (art and journaling materials). Finally, students will end the semester finding a way to teach/share what they have learned in a self-created community wellness project.
