Middle School Calculators? Why? for the Pi's and I's

Help me give my students their best math experience possible. Some math just cannot be done without a calculator, and learning how to use a graphing calculator is an important part of middle school math learning.

My Project

I am requesting 8 TI-83 calculators to replace some of the ones that are at the end of their lives. Over 20 years, the math teacher before me worked to collect enough calculators for a class set. Some of them no longer work, and I am looking to replace them.

Using calculators is not as intuitive for students to use as we may believe; they need to be taught.

Without one-to-one calculators or when students have different versions, it is difficult to teach them the key strokes. This becomes especially important when working with irrational numbers, like square roots and pi.

My students come from an extremely rural community, which is severely under-served. A lot of my students come to school with some pretty tough "stuff" in their metaphorical backpacks. I believe that my students are capable of greatness- as much as their more resourced peers- and I am trying to help break down some of the obstacles by making sure they have access to all necessary academic tools. When the community invests in my students, it builds their self-confidence and self-worth; it helps them become the best version of themselves.
