My Students

As our middle school program is only in its second year, it has been a challenge to put together a comprehensive library. A high percentage of our kids are avid readers, hungry for new, high quality literature.

We are a TItle I school serving a truly diverse student population; we work with middle class students and homeless students, and the school has no ethnic/racial majority.

Two years ago the school expanded from a traditional high school by adding a middle school program. While the middle school has been highly successful and has been at or near capacity since its inception, we are still working to provide our middle school students with the literature that appeals to the.

My Project

This project will fund the purchase of small sets (10 each) of recent, award winning, young adult fiction. These titles will be used as seed books for a middle school "book club" program. Students who are hungry for new literature that they may not otherwise have access to will be invited to meet at lunch, on their own time, to read and discuss these books. As the program develops we'll add more students and collect more titles over time. The particular titles that I am requesting reflect a variety of experiences and identities, and have been specifically chosen to be of high interest to the sixth and seventh grade students with whom I work.

There is no way of knowing how putting a high quality book into the hands of a young adult that might change that person's life.

Reading the story of an immigrant girl, of a teenager who has been bullied all his life, or of a child who is growing up in the Oakland of 1968 will have a different impact on a young person depending on their own history and experiences. It is simply my hope to expose my students to good literature, to help them make meaning of it, and to see how they response.
