Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I teach three sections of 6th grade ELA. My students come from a variety of backgrounds and neighborhoods, and together, we form a diverse, vibrant community of readers and writers.
Recently, our school community sustained a dramatic cut in funding.
In the past, I was able to teach my students knowing that if we needed something basic - pencils, band aids, lined paper - it would be provided quickly and without question. In this new economic climate, I want to make sure I have supplies ready in my classroom for when our school supplies inevitably run out. The average 6th grade writing classroom consumes pencils at an alarming rate! We need consumable materials, like writing supplies, as well as wellness supplies, like band aids and water bottles to keep our classroom running! Many of my students come from low income communities. I would hate to ask parents to provide school supplies for students if I can possibly avoid it.
