Collinsville Community School District #10 has been fortunate enough to be a chosen location for a number of individuals new to the country. Our population continues to expand as well as the needs that accompany the growth. As we work to service our diverse community, the ability to effectively communicate with both students and parents has become increasingly difficult due to language barriers. The district has continued to add staff to accommodate these needs but we still need more.
At Collinsville Middle School we are working to minimize the language barrier by providing some of the adults within the
building with translation devices to allow for more instant and clear communication between adults and students, especially within the instructional environment. Quality devices of this type can be purchased at approximately $150 but would have so much greater value to our students and staff within the classroom by opening up an even clearer and more instant understanding. We are requesting assistance with purchasing Electronic Language Translators for teachers and staff within the building. The cost per device is $150 and we are requesting your assistance. Thank you in advance!
My Project
A number of my students are English Language Learners. I have had student in the past who understand no English at all, until they are in this school for more than 6 months, and still often struggle with certain less concrete concepts.
Students who are learning a new language are often struggling to understand the given verbal or written instructions, which goes along with the demonstration.
Demonstration alone is not enough to help students understand and learn the concepts in the unit, which are based on the National Art Standards. This translator will not only make instructions and learning easier, but may facilitate a quicker understanding of the spoken word as it is used for immediate translation.
The project students ( who are English Language Learners), struggle most with is the study of the language of Art. This includes the vocabulary, more specifically the Elements and Principles of Design. On this project students must not only draw the title word and define it, but must also understand the definitions well enough to illustrate them. You will find part of the instructions below.
Art ABC Project
In our study of art appreciation, we will complete a project instead of taking a test. This project will show the vocabulary of art, meaning the Elements and Principles, with titles, definitions and illustrations. You will follow the pattern of the Alphabet to organize and present your information. You will use one piece of poster paper that will be supplied to you and then present your project to the class.
You will have a minimum of 26 facts on your project, one for each letter of the alphabet. All information presented must be related to the assigned topic. Each fact will be in its own box and must also have a drawing for each word.
