This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

As the social worker, my role is to make sure kids have what they need to come to school and stay in school.

We've had SOOOO many clothing malfunctions this year... many ripped pants during physical education and recess, menstruation accidents, and other daily accidents (bathroom, illness and food spills).

Our clothing cabinet, that was fully stocked to start the year is critically low. Yesterday, for the first time, we were unable to find spare pants for a student... meaning our parents will have to leave their jobs (for immigrant families- this is hard to do) so that the student can remain in school.

We've also had an influx of new immigrants from warmer climates that lack winter clothing as well as limited financial resources to purchase needed school supplies (which are no longer on sale). Generally, I can provide these students with a fully stocked backpack, but I am now out of ear buds and markers, which are essential to their day to day instruction.

All of these items help students to retain their dignity and fully function within their learning environments.
