This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
When you think about science, you most likely think about a person viewing a slide in a microscope. Being a low income school, we do not have all the tools needed for the students. It is critical to understanding and achievement for students to be able to learn biology with microscope slides.
I teach in a charter school located in the North East Los Angeles area.
The majority of my students are socially economically disadvantaged, minorities with the goal to make a difference and attend a college. The larger part of my students will be the first in their families to go to college.
Being mostly underrepresented in science degree programs and science professions, it is important to me to ensure that all my students can get as much exposure to science as possible. Given the situation my students live in, they are not exposed to any real science at home or in their community and it is up to me to make sure that their experience is exciting enough for them to be interested in pursuing some kind of science, engineering, technology, or math profession.
Although difficult, I am confident that every year, by experiencing the fun of science through hands-on activities, I will make their science experience motivating and enriching.
My Project
Look into the lens and see science come alive! Imagine how students will discover a new world every time they get the opportunity to view a slide under the lens of a microscope. The trill of discovering microscopic worlds is part of the memories that make biology such a fascinating course to study.
Students will be able to discover and understand how the cell looks, reproduces, and differs from other cells in single celled organisms to multi-cellular organisms. Students will be able to discover and understand biology and science in a hands-on approach, rather than a picture on the screen.
By donating to this project, you are ensuring that students are going to be able to attain the opportunity to understand biology in greater depth, achieve higher, and view the world differently.
