Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are a Title One Public school in a low income neighborhood in Ca. All of my students receive free lunches and many kids live in non-traditional families where a relative or foster parent may be raising them. Most do not have anyone at home telling them about colleges or that they may ever be eligible to attend a college! Despite these circumstances and financial hardships, they do come each day ready to learn about science and the world! I have a science degree from UCSB and they love doing all science experiments and many say it is their favorite subject! I’m trying to show them that anyone can be a scientist by learning about it!
My Project
We have taken field trips and observed the microscopic world in our water such as plankton while off our school site. It would greatly enhance my class’ understanding of the unseen world by having class microscopes to study this world throughout the school year. We also have a lot of science curriculum that is normally just seen as a photo in a textbook!! I want to make this a Hands-on real life experience for them observing all the living microscopic organisms in our local water ( the CA Delta!) Using slides and microscopes will be a first time class experience for almost all of my students as microscopes are not a common classroom supply that they have ever encountered!
