My Students

Using eBooks and digital courseware in the classroom is the perfect solution to motivate my grade 5 students to read. Using the "Big Universe" digital literature, along with Microsoft Office, to write is one exciting way to support literacy using 21st century technology.

We are an international school community in a New York City public school and are located in one of the most diverse areas of the nation.

Our diversity brings a rich tapestry of cultures together, and our families are keenly aware of the role education plays to further the success of their children. My fifth grade students love technology and are rather facile with the few tablets, Nook and Kindle we have in our classroom. I'd love to be able to load the "Big Universe" courseware filled with literature for the students to enjoy. The children are highly motivated and enthusiastic learners, and access to digital formats make complete sense to them. Just think of the heavy books we avoid placing in backpacks if we could only have the digital courseware to load onto our digital devices. Computers no longer come with Microsoft Office, which we need so the students can write about what they have read.

My Project

We are excited about "The Big Universe" digital courseware that AKJ is making available. We need Microsoft Office licenses to be able to install the software on our computers, so the students can write about their literary journeys that can be shared with their peers. These are all powerful 21st century learning formats that resonate with my fifth graders. "The Big Universe" is a compendium of literature and strategies and it addresses the new Common Core Curriculum that schools are adopting all over the nation. We'd like to join in having the latest resources to meet those curriculum requirements and it includes going high tech. The ease with which students adapt to the use of technology in all content areas makes it a natural choice for us. The cost, however, is often prohibitive and so we appeal to supporters of Donors Choose to help us acquire such powerful resources.

Our families look to us to provide the upward mobility for their children through education.

The best way we can do this is to stay current with the latest technology, while addressing educational reform by meeting the Common Core standards. Financially, support of this proposal would make a huge difference in how we learn, and we'd love to join the rest of the nation in changing the education landscape through innovative ways of learning.
